Oil TEMP Sensor Location?

Hooked up an iPhone obd-ii reader, and see that the code for oil TEMP is showing -40C. The pcm is putting out a value on the CAN bus, yet wondering what -40C means? Is it a phantom-code, or is there really a sensor that's gone bad? I believe I've found the oil PRESSURE sensor, yet can't find an oil TEMP sensor.

Is there really an oil TEMP sensor on this motor?

Thanks!

What was the code? What year and engine do you have?

No CEL or MIL code.

Reading the CAN Bus with a ELM 327, to EngineLink. CAN Bus code is 015C. Value reported is -40C.

Engine Coolant, Throttle Position, Relative Throtttle Position, Boost/Vacuum, Engine RPM, Speed, etc, all return valid values.

98 1.8L Auto.

Could be wrong here but I do not think you have an oil temp sensor in that car, so you see a default reading.

Makes sense, yet interesting. I've seen both no-data, and valid-data, yet not default-data. Thanks!

After doing some digging on Alldata, I agree with Max. Not seeing a oil temp sensor called out on that vehicle. So a default reading it is.

Sounds cool, just suprised, I've never seen a CAN Bus with invalid data. Either "0" or something valid, yet nothing like -40C.

Hey, learn something new, every day. ; )
