96 Cherokee 4.0 in 96 Grand Cherokee
I just bought an extremely clean 96 Grand Cherokee with a blown engine. I have a 96 Cherokee Sport rust bucket that runs great. They are both the 4.0 I6 Autos, my Cherokee has the Command Trac 4X4, the GC has Select Trac 4X4.
I want to swap the engine and tranny because the GC has 55K more miles than my Cherokee. I have no clue how different or similar the 42re and aw4 are. Would the tranny swap be feasible, or more headache than its worth? Other than the water pump and accessories is there anything else I need to swap from one to the other(intake/exhaust manifolds, oil pan, any sensors)? Any info or advise will be greatly appreciated. Re: 96 Cherokee 4.0 in 96 Grand Cherokee
Possible correction. I was thinking my Cherokee had a 2 v-belt setup, but I was wrong. I do know that the clutch fan is in a different place. Does it just bolt to another pulley or are there brackets and/or accessories to swap over. I guess I'll find out when I have them side by side, but it would be nice to not have any surprises.

Re: 96 Cherokee 4.0 in 96 Grand Cherokee
Good questions and apologies for the late reply.
Short answer: I'm not sure. Longer answer: The engine mounts are likely in the same place, so that shouldn't be an issue. It's the transmission mounts I'd be concerned with. Couple of solutions to this are to either measure them (bleagh) or call a junkyard to see if you can swap them over. Good junkyards have a cross reference to say which parts can transfer to which vehicles. A couple of phone calls should give you the answer you need. It might be nice to have 2 trannies available for the vehicle...

Re: 96 Cherokee 4.0 in 96 Grand Cherokee
So far I had to swap the ac bracket, clutch fan, and motor mounts on the engine. Does anybody know if the flexplate needs switched over too. The engine is mounted, but I haven't gotten the tranny to mate yet, and don't want to break anything if it won't fit because of the flexplate. I did some looking online and found conflicting info.

Re: 96 Cherokee 4.0 in 96 Grand Cherokee
Never mind, I found an extensive write up on swapping an aw4 into a Grand Cherokee and it says that you need the AW4 flexplate, so I have to pull it back out for my 42RE flex plate.
