2000 Mustang V6 - Fix for Gas Smell

I am trying to fix a gas smell issue that has been bothering me for months, possibly more than a year on this 2000 Mustang V6.

I have the car up on jack stands, both rear wheels off (going to do annual change over to snow tires too) and all screws off the gas filler tube, both on the inside of the filler door and in the trunk. I assumed that the odor was coming from the gas filler tube gasket that so much has been written about.

When I try to pull out the gas filler tube at the gas tank, there doesn't seem to be enough space to yank the tube out because the bend half way up the filler tube hits the side fender of the vehicle. The rubber seal around the end of the filler tube that goes into the tank appears to be in good shape (appears solid) but it's so full of road gunk, it's hard to tell.

At this point I'm kind of wondering what to do next! Any ideas?

I put it all back and am starting to think that the smell comes from under the hood rather than from the filler tube or tank, but not sure. It seems to be worse when we have driven it for a while and then park it in the garage.

Hey askingalex, mine is a fire red colour with just a bit over 100,000 km (62,000 miles) in A-1 condition inside, outside, and under the hood, dripless oil sprayed every second year with no rust, but sorry I'm not interested in selling it. Good luck in your quest.

BTW, I did find out where the smell was coming from. After a while I started to notice a little fuel dripping onto the ground every time I gased up. The fuel filler tube developed a hole from rust underneath a sock they come with from the factory just at the curve before going into the tank. That sock actually prevented the tube from drying out and from getting oil sprayed, and caused rusting there. Those filler necks are expensive as hell $300 in Canada, plus labor, which took up to four people at the shop 1.5 hours to replace - the tube goes into the tank about a foot so the tank has to be dropped waaaay down to yank out the tube! While we were at it, I also had the sealing gasket at the tank replaced as the old one was starting to show minor cracking.
