Question Compact SUV-some help please...

Hello,
I'm doing research on the Compact SUV class because my wife and I will probably be getting one in the next 6 months or so. From the Washington DC Auto Show I really like the Ford Escape but I noticed that the Mazda Tribute is built on the same frame and the Toyota Rav4 is a top seller. If anyone has looked at the Compact SUV class, could you please tell me what you thought of the models you looked at, not just those I'm interested in. Also, can someone please describe "AXEL RATIO" better to me (2.9 for Ford Escape and approx 4.4 for the others) which is better? And what is "DRAG COEFFICIENT" (Ford Escape is 4.0)? I understand most of the other specs listed on auto review sites.
I'm leaning towards the Ford Escape because I'd rather support US workers and buy something maily built here, but could be persuaded otherwise.

AI can't help much with the axle ratio, but I can say that my in-laws have a Rav4 and they like it very much. I dont fit in it very well, but since everyone in that family is under 5'7" - its a great fit. Toyota has made well engineered cars for a long time now. Fords history and poor styling means I wouldn't buy a car from them.
