Me too...it doesn't work

I've tried the same thing repeatedly, and still get no confirmation the remote is entering program mode. Please post the correct procedure if it's out there.

Thanks,
Nyn

This is why it don't work. This is one you need a scan tool for. Stupid Idea. The procedures are different for each car, and model year, the one mitch supplied looks like the one for older silverado trucks, not sure though.

Transmitter Programming
A remote door lock receiver may have up to 4 different transmitters programmed. You may program a transmitter to more than 1 vehicle providing the remote keyless entry systems are similar. When reprogramming 1 transmitter, reprogram any and all other transmitters (maximum of 4 total per receiver) at the same time in order for the other transmitters to work.

Important
Leave a window down in the vehicle while reprogramming the remote control door lock receiver system. This procedure will avoid an unintentional lock out if the reprogramming is not performed properly.

Turn off the ignition.
Utilize a Tech 2 to program the remote door lock receiver.
Enter diagnostics (F0).
Enter body (F1); select the year (X) and body style (N).
Select "Remote Function Actuation" (F3).
Select "Special Functions" (F2).
Select "Program Transmitters" (F0).
Select the number of transmitters to program (1-4)
Follow the on-screen instructions; press continue, wait for the locks to cycle, hold the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 15-30 seconds, the locks will cycle again.
Exit the vehicle. Attempt to lock/unlock the doors to verify the programming.
Perform the following steps if the above procedure does not program the transmitter.
Reconnect the Tech 2.
Enter service programming (F1).
Press the "REQUEST INFO" key.
Select "Reprogram Existing Module"
Exit the vehicle and remove the Tech 2.
Follow the existing procedure to reflash the body control module.

Scan tool?

Pardon my lack of knowledge in this...but what's a scan tool?

My vehicle is a '99 Grand Am, trying to program 2 remotes (identical remotes) to work with the same car. One already works with it...the other is an extra I was given by a friend who totalled theirs.

I've tried about 5 different sequences and none of them have worked. I'm going to have to get a special device to program them now? The one dealership I called were idiots and said 'it can't be done', which I know is baloney since people BUY these things every day.

Please help.

Thanks in advance,
Nyn

I am not sure what dealership you are talking to but I suggest you try another one. A tech II scan tool is a hand held computer which is specifically designed to communicate with a cars onboard computer system. It is absolutely absurd that the dealership would tell you it can not be done. We do hundreds of these a month. I wish I could help you more but to the best of my knowledge the only way to program your keyless entry is to use the scan tool. The reason for the extra complicity is to deter people from messing with their cars themselves. You can hardly change your own spark plugs these days. The auto dealers are not making the money they used to, cars break down less often and require less maintence, so therefore they have to design everything in a way that the simplest task has to be performed at a dealership. I will talk with one of our techs tomarrow and find out if there is a go around for the scan tool method. I know there are a few but I don't know if any will apply to your car.

Talked to my friend who is a tech at the Pontiac Dealer and he told me there is no work around. The Scan tool has to be used. Sorry I couldn't help with this one.
