pre cats

I have some questions cataylic converters.my daughter has a 2005 tarus with 3.0 ohv engine code u.she had aproblem and kept driving it,one of the pre cats had got hot and melted and came apart stopping up main cat i asume.took y-pipe off and cleaned out bad one.the other pre cat looked good.going to take it for new rear cat.if i put pre cats back on with one good and one opened up will oxygen sensors throw a code?would it even be bad for motor to run this way.just trying to save money for her these things are priced outrageous.any advice would be apperciated.thanks charles

You probably won't have issues with a check engine light due to a hollowed out pre-cat, but I cant' confirm that.

If the converter got so hot that it came apart, there was likely some other issue that caused a bunch of unburned fuel to enter the exhaust on that bank. Is that the "problem" that you mention, and has the problem been fixed?

thanks for the reply knew I could depend on you to answer since you have helped me many times in the past few years.your knowledge base is increadble.thanks for helping so many people.i didn't drive car or here it run just went and picked up with trailer.looks like new coilpack on it.i did change spark plugs.the three on the bank with bad cat were wore out.but the other side with good cat had tips burnt down to nearly nothing.couldnt figure that one out.going to put new wires on today.if you have any advice sure would appeceriate it.thanks again charles

Thanks for the kind words.

As for advice, are you referring to tires or something else? Assuming tires, I've quite pleased with Kumho tires. The price is good and I've not had any complaints with the 3 or 4 sets I've had. I used to get Cooper tires and never had problems with them, but my latest experience with Cooper tires goes back about 15 years so I'm not sure if it would still be valid. My brother had some Nokion tires on a used Explorer he bought and they seemed like good tires. They wore well, got good traction, didn't seem noisy on the highway, and since it was on a used vehicle when he bought it, I'm guessing they weren't very expensive either.
