2001 GTP Tranny?

I had a transmission put into this thing about 2 years ago and the other day it started giving me trouble shifting into 3rd and above. Something I noticed is that while I am giving it gas, the mph gauge seems to work but as soon as I take my foot off the gas the mph gauge drops down 0 mph even though I know I am driving between 15-20 mph. Is this definitely the tranny or does anyone know what this might be indicative of? Also the car seems to hit 3rd if I am giving it more gas from the get go. If I slowly try to go from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, gear etc it seems to have a hard time getting to 3rd. Help! Zep

Could be the speed sensor.

It might be the speed sensor! I have been needing to change out the wheel hubs for a while (ABS and Trac Control light have been on) but I have been either too lazy or too broke to do it. I will start there since I know I have been needing to do that already anyway.

I haven't scanned it for tranny codes just yet since I have to take it to a shop. Will the tranny codes come up with the scanner that Autozone has?

Re: 2001 GTP Tranny?

Steelthee is talking about the speed sensor on the tranny(this is called the VSS, or vehicle speed sensor).....that has nothing to do with the ABS speed sensors in the wheel hubs.....

Also, have you checked level and condition of transmission fluid?

Yes, transmission codes are PCM codes, which their scanner will read.....

LOL Thanks for the heads up about the speed sensor on the tranny. LOL Just checked and the transmission fluid looks pristine. No discoloration at all. I just put in a rebuilt tranny about two years ago so maybe that's why though. I'll have it scanned today or tomorrow and be back to let you guys know what it says.

Re: 2001 GTP Tranny?

Just wanted to give you guys a quick update. The issue I was having was in fact the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) that goes into the transmission on the passenger side. I just did this over this weekend and she is driving nicely again. Thanks for the help.

You had this done, or did it yourself? If you did it yourself, some info about how to do it would be great to read. If you had it done, just disregard. Thanks!

rkvons,

You're right! I didn't even think about it.

I did it myself. It was pretty simple to locate the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) based on the diagram below.

You need to pull off the passenger side wheel and the speed sensor sits right on the top of the transmission as pictured. You can see and touch the VSS from the wheel-well however the nut that you need to remove is on the opposite side of the VSS and I couldn't reach that since there are hoses and wires blocking it.

I jacked the car up high enough to lay on the ground so that I could use my left hand from under the vehicle to guide a size 10 deep socket over the top of the nut while my right hand used the ratchet. (You need a deep socket since the nut and bolt are one piece and a regular socket wont fit over the top.) There wasn't a lot of space so I had to literally go one click at a time and it took about 5 minutes to get off.

Look at the new sensor so that you can see how to remove the wire harness without breaking it. Mine came off and went back in really easy but I have heard they can sometimes be tough.
