1/18 Ferrari 333SP, Daytona 1998

A dutch collector asked me if I could build this car for him, it won the Rolex 24Hrs race at Daytona in 1998 :

I will use a Hotwheels diecast model, with some aftermarket parts and a lot of scratchbuid parts :

I removed the horizontal strip at the bottom of the body. Before :

After :

The nose area in front of the headlights was chopped :

I used my Dremel to make the cut for the air-inlets in the "side-pods" :

Some reference pics :

We're getting there :

Modification of the headlights :

Installing the resin NACA-duct :

Dryfit :

Sincerely

Pascal

Re: 1/18 Ferrari 333SP, Daytona 1998

too nice subject. the real last forgotten daughter from ferrari (cause mostly a Dallara with formula 1 engine....done in a period when ferrari cared only of formula 1 and nothing else). she sucked the life and the company of Momo moretti. He loved too much this beast. seen her racing in monza versus the latest "mythicals" 962 in the 1000 kmts of monza time ago in the 90s.She was a true beast,u can her her engine screaming for half race track. The "mytica"german porsches seems slow as hell compared to hell.Too nice remindings. Also I found one somewhere ON THE ROAD in appennino mountain chain, owned by a local ferrarimaserati dealer. see her parked in front of a typical italian restaurant in the mountains is simply a chock.

Will follow it closely.love too much this forgotten ferrari of the past

Re: 1/18 Ferrari 333SP, Daytona 1998

During the race different nose sections were used. I'm building the version without the louvres, so I started sanding :

The bonnet met my Dremel :

To fit the rims from Legende-miniatures, I used brass and aluminium rods :

LoveGT40 - I remember reading somewhere that Ferrari used the engine from the F50 that theyd just finished getting ready for the F50. but i could be wrong!! So lucky to have seen one race in Person!!!

yes, you are correct
Ferrari told the race organizers that their 333SP was going to use the engine from an upcoming (F50) production car, so the 333SP was allowed to be entered into competition

Re: 1/18 Ferrari 333SP, Daytona 1998

This car has the sides of the chassisplate in the same color as the body :

The Hotwheels model has single large plastic plate :

To make the painting a little easier, I cut them off :

A little plasticard to change the shape :

Once the model is finished, it will only be noticed when you turn it upside down :

This is how Hotwheels made the cockpit tub :

This is the goal :

Photos from Ferraris-online

The seat has some plastic rods glued or molded on the side :

These were cut off :

I took the left sidewall out :

The left sidewall will become a copy of the right , the tub will be divided in 2 parts :

I made a box from plasticard and added a couple of details :

The left side got some details :

Luckily it's still visible with the body on :

The new left hand sidewall is made from 3 pieces of plasticard :

Work on the tub is continueing :

Sincerely

Pascal

Re: 1/18 Ferrari 333SP, Daytona 1998

The number of replies is phenomenal I guess one sees this sort of builds every day.

Ah well, here's another update :

I didn't like the look of the intakes on the sides. Reference picture :

The model looked like this :

I cut the zamac piece out and replaced it with plasticard :

Hotwheels made the suspension like this :

The plastic suspension arms are way to thick for my taste. The suspension will be rebuild with brass :

I replaced the plastic endplate with copper plates :

Dyfit with the wheels :

Sincerely

Pascal

Stunning work on a beautiful car....

I seriously hope that MFH will release one of these one day. I certainly couldn't go through what you're going through.

Keep up the good work.
