97 tbird 4.6 MAF sensor
I recently replaced my MAF sensor as I have been fighting a bank 1 lean code for awhile now. After replacing it and resetting the code I took the car for a drive and it bucked like crazy and would even die acting like it was flooded till it finally thru the code for the TPS communication error. I replaced the TPS and now it isn't kicking as bad as it was but when you take your foot out of the throttle it still loads up and dies and upon restart black smoke rolls out the exhaust like it is flooded. I have cleaned the IAC and the EGR and according to the tests I did from the shop manual they are both working correctly. Also with the new MAF in, the car is like a different car, as long as you have the engine under a load the throttle response is outstanding and the transmission shifts like it has a shift kit in it but the car still floods out and dies. I cleaned the original MAF and reinstalled last night and drove it to work about 43 miles away and so far no code but the throttle response is better than it was but not as good as the new MAF and the transmission is a little sluggish again. Wondering why the new MAF is causing the engine to flood out, is there something that I need to reset? A retired mechanic told me that he heard that if the new MAF isn't the exact same part # as the old I would need to have the computer reprogrammed. Any help would be great.
