Mini Cooper - Toyota Xrunner - Introduction

Hello fellow Autoforum readers! I am dropping a line to say hello and ask for advice. This forum won, hands down, in a pool with our customers, so we figured this is a good place to learn and share. I am looking for some help with my 2004 Mini Cooper. The power steering goes out without warning and then comes back without warning. I have researched the internet and found this is an issue that stopped after the 2004 models, but I have not found a solution that we can do at home. I know plenty about alignments, but little about mystical minis. This is a mini cooper, 2004, manual transmission.
Any advice will be great!

Once I move on from the mini, I will ask about our Xrunner.. another wierd problem with 4th gear.

I look forward to being part of the community and sharing knowledge on diy alignments and specs. Thanks much!
