Replacing the head gasket
My daughter over heated her 96 grand am 2.4L. It has white smoke blowing out the tail pipe and is going through dexcool coolant. I need to know it the head gasket can be replaced without taking the timing chain cover off. The head gasket kit from napa and auto zone shows the timing chain covers also not just the head gasket. So I need to know what is the least amount of work to replace the head gasket?

Re: Replacing the head gasket
Since the timing chaing needs to come off to do the repairs, the timing cover will also need to come off. I recomend getting a repair manual and reviewing the entire proceedure before attempting this repair.

Re: Replacing the head gasket
I agree with GMtech1......
The fact you asked this question, means you don't know what you are getting into.....this is a job where if you don't install the cams, crank sprocket, timing chain and tensioner correctly, you will have major problems.... Anyone, who has never done one before and does not have access to a lift and air tools, figure a minimum of 16 hours..... Also, there may be wear to parts.....tensioner shoe, tensioner, chain(if chain is reused, has to be put back on the same way, there is a colored link on chain to determine this......notice which side it is on when removed), cams, crank sprocket, chain guides, etc...... If w/p was never replaced, now would be the time to do it.....also the thermostat.....good time to flush system.....and DEFINITELY do an oil change.... Since she overheated the engine, the head should be sent out to be checked for cracks and warpage.......unfortunately, repair cost is approaching the value of the car....is it worth it to do this? |
