95 2500 suburban turbo diesel, engine shut off
I was sitting at the light waiting for it to turn green and all of a sudden the engine shut of with all of the check engine lights come on, it stop fast and hard like someone just turned the ignition off. Any ideas what can cause this? I turned the key to the off position and it started right up agin and has been no problem all week, but I am worried about driving it right now.
please help me. |

Fuel pump driver?? Do you still have the driver mounted to the side of the injection pump? When these act up,some replace them and get them mounted in a different location to improve the cooling of the driver. This may be the cause of the shut down.

Re: 95 2500 suburban turbo diesel, engine shut off
Is this the electronic box that is hard to get to on the top the motor? I had it replaced 15k ago or so, the job was around $600 due to the time it took to get to it, I think the part itself was 200 or 250, it supposedly had a new piece on it that helps keep it cooler. When this happened the truck was just started and driven down the road a few miles and it was a cool morning, does it make sense that it could happen then? Can you recommend a wiring harness to add to the existing one to move it further away?

Re: 95 2500 suburban turbo diesel, engine shut off
The driver is mounted directly to the injection pump. The pump is supposed to keep the driver cool so the electronics do not overheat. If you got this 15k ago,I would check for warranty. If the replacement was mounted in it's original position,it did not improve the cooling of the driver.I have seen after market drivers come with a cooling plate that mounts by the intake plenum with the driver mounted on the plate. The wiring has to be pulled towards the new location. There was no adapter wiring in the kit to accomadate the new location.600 dollars to get at the driver would be about right. It does take some time and effort to get at the driver if it is on the injection pump. That's why people get it moved. You may want to ensure that the shut down solenoid works properly and that the wiring to it has a good connection.May be your ignition switch is beginning to fail??

Re: 95 2500 suburban turbo diesel, engine shut off
It happened again this morning, it seems that when it goes from high idol to regular idol that it does this, any ideas?
Where is the shut down solenoid located? Last edited by Eddy1; 09-19-2012 at 06:11 PM. |

Re: 95 2500 suburban turbo diesel, engine shut off
Hey chuck's
I was driving home and it happened 3 times in a row then didn't want to start at all, then I got it running and it was ok again but this almost cause me an accident, it happened in the middle of an intersection. This does seem to happen as it goes to lower idol. Any other ideas before it goes in. The mechanics don't have that much expertise on these odd intermittent problems. Could this be the shut down solenoid or ignition switch? |

Re: 95 2500 suburban turbo diesel, engine shut off
The shut down solenoid sits right on top of the injection pump. You should see a single wire connection on top of the pump. With the engine shutting down only when idling, may be there is a possibillity that air is entering the fuel system.Does the engine seem to have a miss at the higher idle? One other thing to check is the electric fuel pump.Is it working? It looks like an in line gas fuel filter found on gas powered Chevy trucks. This pump brings the fuel to the injection pump.Within the injection pump itself there is a vane type pump. This pump maintains a pressure within the pump to ensure the injection pump is full of fuel. This pump can suck fuel from the tank, but because of the distance,it may not keep the injection pump full of fuel. This can be why the engine dies at idle and runs at higher rpm.

Re: 95 2500 suburban turbo diesel, engine shut off
Thanks for the info, I did get a new fuel pump when I got the fuel pump driver.
I just got it back from the shop, and I was told that the plug for the MAP sensor was not on the sensor, it was lying amongst the rest of the cables. Can the engine even run with this completely disconnected? I guess if I drive it for a few weeks and there's no problem I will trust the truck again. Right now I am a bit weary. |

why no check engine light when engine is running??That would be my question if MAP sensor not connected.
