2001 Grand Am Cruise Control Problems

The Cruise Control on my 2001 Grand Am V6 GT1 is not working. After doing some research on this and other forums I have replaced the Cruise Control Module, checked the plug attached to the Module for power, Checked the Switch that attaches to the Brake Pedal. Also, the Light on the ON/OFF Button comes on and the Fuses are fine.

So based on my research, it seems as if I have checked or replaced all things that would seem to be a problem.

I would appreciate any suggestions as I am starting to get really frustrated.

Re: 2001 Grand Am Cruise Control Problems

I had a problem with mine a few years ago and it turned out to be the switch part that was on the steering wheel.

Is there a way to check to see if the switch is bad?

This is a stupid question but did you check to see if the cable came off your throttle body?

Re: 2001 Grand Am Cruise Control Problems

Why is it a stupid question? As I mentioned in my initial posting I have checked everything along with replacing the Module. Again on the Steering wheel controls, the ON/OFF light comes on but the SET or RESUME does not work. If the question is so stupid then do you have a suggestion?

Re: 2001 Grand Am Cruise Control Problems

I would take the switch module (where Set and Resume buttons are) apart and clean the contacts. It may be that the Set switch just isn't making contact. On mine, it was the On switch, a little metal (gold plated) disk which when pressed was supposed to make contact between two solder-runs on a little circuit board. Cleaning worked for a while, but I eventually just soldered the runs together so that my cruise control is always "on".
I was able to test the "On" switch just by using a small screw driver to short the solder-runs together; with the key-on the green "cruise" light would come on. But in your case the Set won't work till you're going ~30 mph, so testing it would be a little harder.

Hope this helps.

Use Craig labs Deoxit. It is used to remove the corrosion from the contacts and yes gold can have minor corrosion. The Deoxit also includes a special lube to keep the contacts from arcing.

Re: 2001 Grand Am Cruise Control Problems

Thank you very much for the information. I hope that is the problem. Is the switch hard to take apart?

No, its not hard to take apart. Mine actually is hard to hold together since my daughter pushed on it too hard. I think there are screws in the back of it, but its been quite awhile since I had it apart.

Re: 2001 Grand Am Cruise Control Problems

My fiances cruise control light would come on but it didn't work. There are two cables attached to the throttle body and one is for the cruise control. Hers came off and all I did was snap it back on and everything worked fine.

Re: 2001 Grand Am Cruise Control Problems

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I took the switch module on the steering wheel apart and cleaned the contacts, checked the cruise control linkage on the throttle body again and still nothing. At this time I have no clue what the problem is.

Re: 2001 Grand Am Cruise Control Problems

Thank you very much for the suggestion but I already checked the fuses and they were fine. I guess I will have to start from scratch and recheck everything as I can't figure out why it wont work.

Re: 2001 Grand Am Cruise Control Problems

Did you ever find the cause of this? My 2001 GA has the same issue. Good fuses. Good voltage on A - J of the CCM connector as each button/pedal is pressed. However, on my connector, there is no "I", just skips from 'H' (CC Inhibit Signal) to 'J' (CC engaged signal), then 'K' (VSS-Vehicle Speed Sensor).
The voltage from the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) was '0', of course. But I'm thinking I might put the front end on stands and measure it as someone slowly increases the speed.
BTW: This thread has three schematics and a trouble-shooting process for the '01 (& maybe others): http://www.justanswer.com/pontiac/1o...t-working.html
