1998 olds 88 whining noise

The car makes a whining noise as you drive, sounds like it is coming from the trans axle, and when I turn or bear to the right it stops, both axles have been replaced. Anybody have any clues to what it might be? Also you can fell slight vibration in steering wheel, which also stops on right turns.

Is it noisy when sitting still or only when moving? Still noisy when turning left and not right sounds like a bad hub bearing.

No noise when standing still, it is driving problem, how can i tell which hub is bad? Right or left side, as i stated it stops when turning or bearing to the right.

Jack it up there should be some play in the suspect wheel.

Re: 1998 olds 88 whining noise

If you drive the vehicle down the road to about 30-40 mph and the whine gets loud.....then slightly turn the steering wheel slightly left and then slightly right....if the noise gets louder turning in one direction and gets lower or goes away, when turning in the opposite direction, that's classic wheel bearing noise...

Can't be judged just on play....have seen one's with play be replaced, and it turned out to be the one on the other side....only foolproof way is to jack the vehicle up safely or put it on a lift.....put the car in drive(don't touch gas pedal)...hold one wheel from spinning, which causes the other to spin faster,,,,now with a mechanic's stethescope on a bolt to the hub assembly, listen.....then do the same to the other side.....loudest side gets the new bearing.....

Remember, if jacking up on the ground, block the rear wheels(and apply e-brake) and make sure the front end is safely, and securely jacked up......would be a good idea to have someone behind the wheel, to put it in gear, and apply the brake in case of an emergency....
