'98 Passport Oil Guzzler
Hey guys,
My buddy has a '98 Honda Passport. The thing burns oil like a mutha. Its a '98 4WD V6 (can remember size 3.0, 3.2L?). The thing has 85k on it. We went from Chicago to Pittsburgh and back a year ago (1000 mile round trip) and it used 2 quarts of oil! When we got back, I did a tune up for him, which included a PCV valve hoping this might be the cause of the problem. I've checked all the fliuds on the thing and changed the oil before. There are no leaks. I can't remember if it smokes or not when it starts up. What do you think, valve seals? That or piston rings, but I would think valve seals would be more likely. I know its the OHC motor (if that helps at all). I work on HUMMERs, not Hondas (rebadged Isuzu), so I don't know if this a common problem or not. Any ideas?

Not a common problem to my knowledge, but i will tell you they suck to work on. I've put motors in two of them at work. Check to see if its blowing smoke or not.

Re: '98 Passport Oil Guzzler
Speed -
I have a 1999 Passport 4WD EX with 52K. Same problem. I bought it with 30K on it and it's burned a quart per 1000 miles ever since. Not only that, but it goes through coolant too. Resevoir empties every 1000 miles or so, and if I don't fill it, the radiator will eventually end up bone dry. There are no visible external leaks, mechanic pressure tested cylinders, radiator, nothing turned up. I'm thinking it could be intake manifold gasket for the coolant. As far as the oil, I've been told by more than one person that's pretty common for that Isuzu engine to burn through a quart every 1000 Miles or so. Amazing. Let me know if you learned anything in your troubleshooting. I love the looks of the Passport, but it's definitely NOT a Honda.

they did have a problem with the intake gaskets breaking and creating a vacumn leak, and the intake gaskets suck to replace...

Re: '98 Passport Oil Guzzler
Well guys, oil consumption on the Passport sucks. According to Honda, 1qt. per 1000 miles is supposed to be normal. I think that's totat bullshit!! But Honda says it's normal. I case you're wondering I was a service advisor at a Honda dealership...mike...

Have you seen a time chart suggesting normal replacement time? I have a friend with a dead 99.. Wants me to replace the engine for him, and am trying to get an idea of what kind of time I'll have wrapped up in this thing.. |

Re: '98 Passport Oil Guzzler
Problem is so many people use a 5w-30 oil and don't think to realize that this engine is really NOT designed for such a thin oil.
Without knowing what year of truck, or engine you have, the 98-2000's were notorious for consuming oil, it was a defect in the overall design of the rings within the engine. And probably due to people not changing the oil enough, specially if yours was used prior to your purchase. These Isuzu's MUST have very clean oil, they like it, and do much better on it. Be cautious and be sure to check your oil at EVERY gas fill-up, as the 98+yrs are again notorious for drinking a quart every 500 miles. The 93-97 Rodeos, 3.2L engines are not notorious oil drinkers, I've had 2, and neither one has ever used oil. Our latest one has 188k and I never have to add oil between changes, except on the very rare occasion with intense mountain peak driving.
