i dont know about 2011, however i have the 2012 usb integrated system and it works perfectly with my i phone, i am not hearing any backgroud noises ...
just as a thought how old are your ipod or iphone connection cords, it could be an issue created by that cord, also check the plug on your i pod and i phone devices to make sure they are free of pocket lint, dirt, or other forign debrees as these could make connection issues and background noises be heard...
