Question Car Diagnostic Tool suggestions needed

I'm really looking to cut down on the amount I get overcharged by garages, so have thought of completing my own diagnostic of the vehicles, but what is the most user friendly and reasonably price car diagnostic on the market, and I really don't want anything to elaborate, merely something to tell me what is the issue, so I can know I'm not getting over-quoted?

Thanks for the advice, I have been pointed in the direction of Launch Diagun X431 tool - what do people think?

I think for what you were seeking in your original post, this is WAY overkill. If all you're really looking for is a simple tool, there are a lot of less expensive options on the market.
