Re: I want to learn about cars
AF is a good start.
Find a mechanics special on craigs, use AF, www.alldata.com, www.partsgeek,com , www.autopartswarehouse.com , and Google DTC's. We will be glad to help you walk through the process. Also do www.youtube.com / Google ''youtube DIY Auto repair'' |

Re: I want to learn about cars
Keep it simple!
What elements do you need for a fire? Air, fuel, ignition, and exhaust 4-stroke on a single cylinder X 4,6,8, or 12 cylinders. 1) Intake - Air/fuel + intake valves open. 2) Compression - valves are closed 3) Power - ignition = hp 4) Exhaust - exhaust valve opens Test's are much cheaper than throwing parts @ the problem. |

Re: I want to learn about cars
Don't count out your local library, lots of good stuff in there also! Also, depending on how far you want to go, local community college may have classes.

Re: I want to learn about cars
knowing what's under the hood is a very small part of what a vehicle is and how it works
best advice- become freinds with someone who really knows vehicles- and spend as much time as he does on tinkering/servicing/repairing- next- being that you might have just finished College- take a course in a Junior College on automotive aside from that- get greasy with a mechanic |

Re: I want to learn about cars
Anything lost during the four cycles could cause a misfire:
Air - Bad air filter, bad MAF sensor,Bad HO2 sensors, dirty throttle body, unmetered air leaks in PCV, EGR, and air Intake system. Fuel - Bad fuel filter, bad fuel pump, fuel pump fuse, relay, or injector. Compression - Bad Intake/Exhaust valves, or rings. Ignition timing - Bad spark plug, wire, COP, Coil, ignition module, or bad physical timing. Exhaust - Bad or broken catalytic converters are are known to block the exhaust flow and choke an engine out. Questions can point us in the right direction. Is the Check Engine Light (CEL) on? Do you know the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) ? Is the misfire on a single cylinder, or random misfires on random cylinders? Doe's bad weather, or car wash play a factor? How old/mileage ? Is your car maintenance on schedule? Last edited by danielsatur; 06-26-2012 at 06:56 PM. |

Re: I want to learn about cars
How about a little History lesson, before the HHR, & PT.
see www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Model_T 9/1908 - 10/1927 , that's why the other 2 have problems. |

Re: I want to learn about cars
You might consider a basic electronics class too.
Know Ohms Law: E = Voltage R = Resistance I = Current E= I x R Fuse - protects the Control modules, and circuits from a dead short. Short - A short will take the path of less resistance and blow a fuse. Open - Blown fuse, bad Relay , bad light bulb, bad control module, or electronic device. Relay - Enables a small current to trigger a large current device. Bat - Battery 12vdc, Coil - Steps up, or step down voltage COP - Coil on plug 1) Rain & car wash can play a big factor in causing a short, thus losing your control modules and other devices. 2) A bad battery, loose, or dirty connections can cause all kinds of electrical problems. Example - dirty, or loose connections can keep the alternator from charging your battery. Have the battery charged & load tested at your local auto parts store.
