2003 Malibu whining noise
I have a 2003 Malibu, 3.1 Liter.
About a year ago I started hearing this whining noise, sounds like an electric 15amp drill. The frequency increases as engine RPM increases. I replaced the idler wheel next to the alternator, thinking it was that, as the sound seems to be coming from there, but this was no help. I replaced my alternator last night, started the car, and the noise is still there... It sounds like a loud electric motor..almost like an old Ford power steering pump, but the sound is more prominent at higher RPM, not when turning.Any ideas? I saw a few threads with people having the same issue, but there doesn't seem to be a solution. ![]() thanks! -ry |

Re: 2003 Malibu whining noise
If you think the noise is from a pully, the easiest way I have found to locate a noise like that is with a mechanics stethascope. One can be purshased from almost any parts store. Remove the end off of the tube and move the tube from pully to pully until you find the noise to be the loudest.

Re: 2003 Malibu whining noise
FIXED... the noise was from the serpentine belt tensioner pulley wheel. Replaced it and all is quiet now!!
