Grinding noise from water pump area

So I just installed a new water pump a couple months ago. Lately I have been hearing a horrible metal on metal grinding noise, almost like a fire alarm bell ringing. It happens when I start the car up cold and usually goes away in a minute or two, except for yesterday when it persisted for an entire 5 minute drive. I tracked it down this morning and it seems to be coming from the water pump. Have I installed a faulty pump? Or is there something else going wrong in there? Coolant is full and I'm not noticing anything leaking from the weep hole, but then I haven't driven it much before I checked. Should I let it run for a few minutes and then check for leakage, or would it be apparent?

Remove the serpentine belt from the engine, this will isolate the water pump, power steering pump, and the alternator for the short.

Also grab all the pulleys and rotate them with a little sideward force, and "feel" the bearings.....

Re: Grinding noise from water pump area

It's definitely coming from the water pump, and there is no play in the pulley in any direction. I will go on a small drive today to check for leakage, though not too long since I'm still dealing with a clogged catalytic converter till the new one gets here on friday. The last water pump was leaking enough onto the pulley and the belt that there was a streak on the hood insulation from coolant being flung all over it, but this time it's not so obvious.

Re: Grinding noise from water pump area

Won't be the first time you buy an aftermarket pump, and it fails......should be under warranty.....
