I really miss the four-speed of my previous Trans Ams. Other than the transmission, bell housing, clutch assembly and pedal assembly, anything else I would need? What's the best tranny for the 78 400?

Re: Auto to 4 speed conversion
Depending on the transmission you select you will most likely need a transmission mount, transmission cross member (modified or replaced) and possibly a modified or replaced driveshaft.
The transmission you select will depend on your budget and interests. Example: what is your intended purpose with the car? Are you trying to make your car look bone stock for 1978? Are you just driving it, or are you racing it? Since you're looking at replacing the transmission I would recommend one with an overdrive. a T-56 6 speed transmission would be great. You'd have the benefit of a close ratio 4 speed with a double overdrive. The best of both worlds. these are plenty strong enough for your smog era 400 and are available. They're not the cheapest transmissions, but they are well worth the expense. I hope this helps.
