what will this chip do to my car?
i have a 2003 Lincoln LS 3.9.
performance chips "claim" to give more horse power an increase fuel economy up to 8 miles per gallon. i get 15 to 16 mpg and i would like to get alot better. anything close to half the 8 mpg that they promise, i would be happy with. for 60 bucks i cant imagine i would notice a difference. so is it a risk to put it on my car? will it damage anything? will i notice a difference in power AND fuel economy? if not, are there chips out there that DO work? also, are there any tips for increasing fuel economy and adding power for someone on a budget? the chip is a PCN-513 by PERFORMANCE CHIPS NOW for a 2003 Lincoln LS sport 3.9 v8. any help? thanks j |

Re: what will this chip do to my car?
It's not really a chip. It's just a resistor with some junk around it to make it look like it is something more.
What it does is it alters your intake air temperature reading to make the PCM think the incoming air is hotter or colder than it really is. This might make a slight momentary difference, but the feedback from the 02 sensors will quickly cancel this out and return the mixture to the correct level. Any improvement in power or mileage will purely be due to your imagination or you changing your driving style to get better mileage because you want this to work. I have a 2004 LS V8 and 2006 LS V8. Both get 18 to 19 MPG in mixed driving and somewhere in the twenties for long interstate trips. If you are really determined to get better performance or mileage (you can't have both, you have to sacrifice one to get the other), you can do so with a FLASH tuner. These allow you to alter the engine management tables in the PCM, and are the only way you can get anywhere with it. Note that you may also shorten engine life doing this. |
