Black plastic box attached to rear view mirror stem?

A rear view mirror was removed from 2001 Windstar to be installed on my Ford Taurus. A black plastic box, appx 2" wide 3" long 1" thick with rounded edges, attached to the mirror stem, was also removed just because the cables were wrapped together.

What is this box called? I don't see any wire running between the box and the mirror. Thanks.

Some Winnie's have information centers in the instrument panel that includes compass information. I think that black box is the magnetic sensor for the compass info.
