01 2500HD no 4x4, shifts hard

I have a 01 2500HD and when i slow down it feels like it shifts really hard down into 1st. Then when i take off it feels like it shifts hard out of 1st, dosen't do it other than those two. The dealer told me that it was because the HD were designed to pull heavy loads and it needs to be able to jerk it when i was completly stopped. True or full of it? That also comes from the dealer who, when i got it, was completly out of powerstering fluid, and i didn't notice till 5 minutes down the block, when i made a right turn. Also the tail pipe rattles when i slow down what can be done about that. Thanks for any help.

Interesting that there are no replies to this problem. Did you ever figure what the root cause was? I have an 01 2500HD also and I notice the hard shifting once the transmission warms up. There might be some truth to the pulling a load theory cause I don't notice the jerky shifting when I am pulling my travel trailer.

If you by chance have figured out what is causing that, I would be interested to hear what you know. Thanks.
