Duncan1098 - does Hiroboy have the paint ready for sale - I looked at the Hiroboy website, but didn't see it listed? Can you PM me if you have any ordering information - John

Re: 2011 flying lizard porsches

Wow this is like a tutorial!! Thanks for sharing, am eager to see more progress. I wish the bodies weren't that expensive and avaliable here in the states. You europeans get all the goodies.

Time to continue! But before I do...some responses to your kind comments:

Quote:
I don't suppose you want to make a paper template outlining the belly pan modifications and diffuser and post them to the internet in a PDF 1:1 scale?
I will do this after I make the final assembly of one of the cars, just to be sure everything is OK.

The photos of the orange car, can you see, is different in the rear to the model of Carrera. Itīs similar to the Fujimi model.
You are right. The Carrera body is perfect for the blue car. The orange car has a different engine cover and tail lights. I am planning to adapt the Fujimi parts to one of the Carrera bodies.

Quote:
Are you going to install the Fujimi headlights and covers on the Carrera body...? The clear parts from the slot body is rather terrible
Thanks Robi! The Fujimi headlight covers are too big for the Carrera body. I am planning to do some modifications to the Carrera pieces to make them look a little better. I think is either that or making new thermoformed pieces.

Quote:
Steve at Hiroboy has done the paint for us, he was saying that the Profile24 zero paint codes were not very acurate.
This is great news!! But I am a little worried after seeing the photo of the paint jars, since they look plain paints, not pearlescent. I have some close up photos of the cars and I believe the paints used in the real cars are pearlescent. After checking Zero Paints catalogue, it looks to me that Arancio Atlas Pearl or Arancio Borealis Pearl (Lamborghini colors) would be better choices for the orange car.

Well, let me show you the latest work I have done:

First, I opened holes to use screws to attach the body to the chassis. The screw heads will be covered by the diffusers:

I sanded off the mounting tabs of the rear diffuser. Also, the sides must have a different angle to fit the carrera body (the right part is the original and the left part is the final result):

For a proper fit of the rear diffuser with the body, the mounting holes in the chassis must be moved 1 mm to the front:

This way, you get a nice, tight fit:

After checking my references, a little "lip" of the rear diffuser must be present in the sides after the body is installed:

The front diffuser of the fujimi kit is very thick, and it must follow the contour of the nose of the carrera body, so used thin sheet styrene to do a new one:

I temporary glued the diffuser to the body, so I could do some fine sanding to make the contours match:

In the sides of the front diffuser, a "lip" must be present on the sides:

After all this adjustments, the chassis and diffusers fit a lot better in the carrera body:

Thatīs it for the moment! Next, some detailing of the chassis and suspensions! Thanks for your interest!

Re: 2011 flying lizard porsches

Excellent tutorial sam01contact - your explanations and pictures are a great help. I'm still waiting for my 2 Carrera GT3 RSR bodies to arrive from Germany. I cannot wait to get started on them. Also the Hiroboy "Zero" paint can be covered with a pearlescent clear to make it like the Flying Lizard colors. It's just the base color that needs to be correct for the pearl clear. Where is the source for the paints you have mentioned? Thanks sam01contact - John

Re: 2011 flying lizard porsches

Hi Sam01contact, Steves paints are all pearlescant, they are pre-mixed, so don't need a silver base coat, just sprayed onto white.

Thought these might help you out.

The paint is actually flat and the flake is in the clear coat. This means that the flake is present in all the graphics as well. So you are better off using the flat paints with flaked clear coat.

Re: 2011 flying lizard porsches

Jedi801, thanks! You are right...in the original cars, the pearl effect cover all the graphics.

I am ordering the ZERO paints for the Lizards, in the order I will include their pearl clear. I want to see how big the pearl "flake" looks in 1:24. If it is too big, I prefer to use the pearl paint and cover with regular clear.

Re: 2011 flying lizard porsches

It is as I had believed - when I was racing superbikes here in the USA during the late 90's we used to paint the base colors on the bike panels and then decal it with an intricate paint scheme and cover with a clear. The reason why the paint is "scotch-bite" is so the decals will lay down flat and so the clear will "bite" into the paint and not flake off at a later time. - Thanks for posting this - John

Re: 2011 flying lizard porsches

Sam, do you have a plan for how you are going to handle the tail lights for the orange car. As you have noticed the lights on the orange car are the face lifted 997 lights while the blue car still has the pre face lift lights.

pre face lift.

Post face lift.

I noticed the Fujimi model has the post face lift lights. I was thinking you could either graft the rear tail light section onto the Carrera body or modify it so the tail lights from the Fujimi kit will fit.

Well, after checking exhaustively my reference photos, I have detected all the differences between the orange and blue cars. The front is identical in both cars. (Thanks to Mikezibit for all the advice):

Basically, the blue car is the old RSR, and the orange car is the 2011 RSR. The engine covers, lights and exhaust openings are different between the 2 cars. The orange car also presents an extra air opening for the engine:

The Carrera body will represent exactly the blue car:

And the Fujimi rear section of the body is perfect for the orange car:

I took measurements of both cars, and as far as I can see, the best way to go for the orange car would be cuttting the whole rear section of the Fujimi body and "transplant" it to the rear section of the Carrera body.

Iīll make some serious planning to do this and show you the result very soon!
