Looking for a type of car great gas mileage and customizable

Hello all,

In a few months I will be looking for a used car from a private seller. Of course I will get it checked out by a mechanic before I hand over the money. The most I would like to spend is between $500-$1500.That's all my wife and I can afford to pay for a car. I just have a few requirements. I want to have a stick shift not mandatory but it would be nice to drive again. Also have great gas mileage since I will be going from work, to school and back home again. Also very good reliability. What I mean customizable is that if I'm looking for a aftermarket part for the car I want to have many options. Also it must have four doors. No hatchbacks.

I was looking for a Amsoil Absolute efficiency air filter but is not compatible with my current car. If I want to put a cold air intake in this car in the future I want to buy a kit that's made for my future car and not something I have to build and hope that it works.

So can someone here recommend what model and make for my requirements?

Thank you.

Honda Civic. You won't get much for that price range.
