Phil , Ford and GM never shared engines - they are competitors ! Yes , they both had 400 cubic inch engines but they weren't the same engine . Pontiac ( at one time ) also had a 400 c.i. engine but it also was not the same engine you mention nor was it a Chevy engine . In the early years , all GM divisions had their own unique ( to their brand ) engine . Then in the late 70's , they started sharing some of the engines in the different GM brands , calling them " corporate " engines instead of ( for example ) a Chevy or Oldsmobile engine . Ford basically used the same engines in all their brands ( Ford , Mercury , and Lincoln ) . They often used standard performance enhancing modifications ( camshafts , higher compression , etc. ) to increase HP so as to differentiate between the brands . I believe Chrysler even had a similar size engine that was unique to the Chrysler brand . So if your Ranchero has a GM engine , I assure you it isn't the original engine and someone would have had to swap it in there . As far as the cost of rebuilding your engine , that is affected by many factors including location , present condition of your engine , etc. ! Generally speaking , I'd say in the $ 2,000 - 2500 range but that could vary wildly up or down depending on many factors. ! A cheaper option is to buy a rebuilt or crate engine and using many of the external parts ( from your original engine ) on the new short ( or long block ) . Parts such as manifolds , valve covers , etc. to lower the cost . The 400 c.i. engine gets it's size designation as a result of it's bore and stroke . The 400 c.i. is a designation of that particular engine size , not of it's brand ( Chevy , Ford , Chrysler ) . If you compare all the above engines specifications ( bore and stroke size ) , you'll see that none of them have the same specs even though they all calculate out to 400 c.i. ! Sorry to be so long - winded but it is a confusing subject ! Hope I helped - good luck 1
