Trans troubles - 5MT AWD

I bought the car assuming it needed a trans for $150.

I got it to go into 1st and 2nd, then 3rd, so I drove it home. No 4th or 5th. Reverse is iffy, but works.

While driving, it will stay in first and second, but grinds under accel (not decel) like crazy. Any time I hit the accelerator while in gear, the clutch pedal moves about 2 inches, and in 3rd gear, the more load you put down, the harder the gear selector tries to shove back at you and pop out of gear.

I got 4th and 5th while stopped, but not able to use them while driving.

At this point, it seems alot like the VW misaligned shifter issue. I'm thinking it might just need a trans mount and some bushings. Anyone else feeling like that? Any other things to check? New to Subaru, not to cars.

Any on-topic advice is appreciated.

Re: Trans troubles - 5MT AWD

YOu didn't say what year or how many miles / engine.

Clutch comes to mind for me first. If it's out of alignment or failed internally somehow it might cause the issues.

But the grinding under acceleration might indicate a bad bearing or two internally.

-edit- Crikey, I just checked the date on your post....I'm not on much the last year or so. What did the problem turn out to be?
