Catalytic Convertor Covered under Warranty?

I have a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan. With 79,950 miles on it, the check engine light came on while on vacation. Took it into a shop and they charged about $100 to diagnose it as a P0420 bad Cat. Con. code. Drove through vacation week and then the light went off. I now have 82,000 miles on and the light came back on with same code. If I take it into a shop with original paperwork showing bad cat. conv. before 80,000 miles will this be covered under warranty?

Re: Catalytic Convertor Covered under Warranty?

Federal warrenty is 8-year/80K miles on OEM Cats.
$100 is way too much for a test, the P0420 already tells me that the cat is bad.
Do a Google ''Youtube Auto catalytic converter test'' , or a local muffler shop will do it for free.

if you bring in your paper work to the dealer they should honor their warranty.that being said they could also be a ..... & tell you its out of
warranty,at that point i'd contact the dealer rep.i'd also try to get your
100 bucks refunded

It's probably best to get a failed inspection report and file the claim yourself, a local muffler shop can do the install.

The dealership will probably take $150 for the install.

Yes it could be your cat but with the light going off and driving the amount you did I would look at how well the precat 02 sensor is working. I had the same problem on a windstar and watched the sensor and found it to be lazy, changed it and have not had a problem in over 5,000 miles.

A back stream HO2 sensor simulator could also resolve this problem.

Re: Catalytic Convertor Covered under Warranty?

I cannot imagine any dealer putting that through warranty willingly. You needed to have it in a dealership before 80K to get warranty coverage, plain and simple.
