Got any CHEAP TIPS for improving performance?
I have a 92 Talon TSI AWD 2.0 Turbo...
its in pretty decent shape, runs pretty good, i just got the car, i love it. Yesterday I set up my forced air induction using a PVC 3 inch to 2 inch reducer coupling and some flexibl radiator hose, feeding the air box with some RAM AIR if you will it seemed to work great on my last car, improved gas mileage and what not now maybe i'm just imagining but would this also increase my PSI? I could swear that i'm gettin a few more pounds on the average of boost.... on acceleration maybe not i was wondering though if anyone else had any CHEAP do it yourself, or EASY TIPS to get more power/speed/take off out of this car I'd like TAKE OFF power more than anything the car FLIES at mid range and high speeds, like goig 35-90 feels like it takes a split second but it feels a bit sluggish to just BOLT off the start any tips, email me at [email protected] or AIM = Etatthuhy thanks ! |

weight reduction. Take out the back seats. Getting off the line fast is hard to do with 4 cylinders. also could you give somemore info on that home made ram-air you did? i might do it to my cars.

Re: Got any CHEAP TIPS for improving performance?
back seats dot weigh crap. you can take off damm fast with 4 cylinders when you also have a turbo and awd. hopefully you have a stick shift if you do the when youe at the line hold the rpms at about 5500 to build boost then slip the clucth out as fast as you can without loosing boost. work at it and youll get it. intake and exhaust will help you too and a stutterbox makes launching easier

home made ram air
I took the vent piece thats in the metal right in front of the air box inlet, took that out, then cut the metal out all around right behind the headlight and in front of the air box inlet. Then I cut away some of that black plastic underneath around the fog light and around the center part, made room for the hose to go through. I found a 3/2 PVC reducer coupling and put that in the front grill for my catch tube, and ran a piece of radiator hose up through the parts that i cut away so it openend up directly into the air box almost perfectly. It feeds the air box a great deal more air, RAM AIR really. So it can get the air more quickly and easily when its given more gas which I would think allows it to accelerate faster and more smoothly giving it better gas mileage and more acceleration, and i'm not sure about this but it seems more boost, the air box has a connection to the turbo, and with acceleration increased the boost increases as far as it looks to me... but who knwos I did it on my last car and it was cool too |

Re: Got any CHEAP TIPS for improving performance?
i just wanted to add thati tried some of those mods like removing the air can completely and bolting the air filter right to the piece,
i was only getting 7-8 PSI TOPS after I did that mod, so i re-modified my RAM AIR set up and made more of a largeer intake for it, let more air slam into MORE of the air filter the result now i get 13-14 max pressure although it is my STOCK gauge so its hard tellin what i'm REALLY getting but it was a sweet mod to put the ram air tubing and reducer in the lower grill |

exactly where is this ram air thing in ur grill cuz the side mount intercooler is right below the intake by the wheel.....

the 3/2 reducer coupling is mounted on the farthest left part of the lower grill but still in the center main opening, and comes up through that area just behind the headlight and then through the metal which i cleared out and cut into the air cannister more
and made a larger area of intake and a more direct intake when I re modified it with extra pieces of plastic and attaching it to the cannister and around the pipe that feeds the air from the front end of the car pushing a lot more PSI since I did that worked a lot better than taking the whole can off |

Re: Got any CHEAP TIPS for improving performance?
When I put a cone air in my 94 it took away from my low end torque a noticable amount... My car isnt' turbo, so I dont know if that would be the problem your having off the line, but I felt that it was going slower in the begining and faster after about 30mph.

I ended up sealing up the faulty stock exhaust manifold with some good paste stuff thats resistant to heat, I got a ton more BOOST at any speed just from making that seal "happen" again and I also tightened down the bolts on the manifold to the turbo, worked great
til i drove it for about and hour and a half on my way to school and the thermostat either went out or jammed and the car heated up REAL QUICK and blew the head gasket about 35 miles from my school.... had it towed there... it sits in the parking lot now like an ornament |

Re: Got any CHEAP TIPS for improving performance?
TSI_AWD_Turbo;
I can't speak for exhaust manifolds on a 92 turbo talon, but finding one without a crack in it on a non turbo is a challenge! Mine cracked, and it leaked pretty bad, particularly when the car wasn't completely warmed up. I must have looked at more than a dozen different Talons and Eclipses at different bone yards before I finally found one without a crack in it. They all crack in nearly exactly the same place. Anyway, if the crack is bad it can cause one or two of your cylinders to run leaner, and of course, as you have discovered, you're loosing boost through it. Since you're going to need pull the head off anyway, now is the perfect time to look for an aftermarket manifold/header to replace your stock one with! Mark |
