Red face New Hyundai i10 Vs Used Kia Rio?

Hi everyone!

Just a quick note - I'm not from the US so car prices might differ. Thanks.

I have been viewing 2nd hand cars within my budget range ($15'000). Although the other day a friend told me not to consider used cars because they're more likely troublesome. So the cheapest brand new, small car I've found available in the country - and within my budget - is the Hyundai i10 ($18'000)...okay, slightly above my budget.

Just earlier today someone offered me a used Kia Rio (2 previous owners) for $16'000. A brand new Kia Rio is $27'000. I wasn't at home at the time, but my family members were, and they were really impressed. They said it looked brand new.

I won't buy anything before I get a certified mechanic to check the car, but I was wondering if it's something I should consider? The Kia Rio is closer to my budget range...but if I buy the Hyundai i10 it would be brand new. It's only a $2000 difference between the brand new Hyundai and the used Kia...this is a tough one.

Please help! Thanks so much!

Well, Stateside we only have the Kia Rio. The Hyundai model you mentioned isn't familiar to me.

As long as you can get the Kia looked over and it comes out running well, it isn't necessarily a bad thing. I bought a used Honda Civic recently, and it is my preferred mode of transportation despite having an SUV and motorcycle. LOL

Good luck in your search! Don't forget to come back and post what you decide!

I have no choice but to choose cars that are available in my country. That way, if I ever need spare parts for them I won't have to bring them in, which will cost a bomb. Only German, Japanese and Korean brands are available here.

I was reading online and people are saying that the Kia Rio tends to be troublesome after a few years. This could be the reason why I'm being sold that car. Initially, I was tempted but now I think I'll just wait a bit. I have my eye on the Daihatsu Sirion as well, but that's way above my budget right now ($28'500) for a brand new one.
