Unhappy 93 Toyota Pickup 2WD -Runs but no acceleration

Here I am back again at the post with another problem. The pickup does start now, and the idle is good but it doesn't accelerate after I am on the road. It reaches only 1st gear. I headed up the hill on Pago Bay but couldn't get the pedal to move the car faster. So, I limp back to my house on first gear. It jerks a little but I do get home without any problem. The clutch pressure plate was changed, cylinder head was replaced, and a tune-up was done in 9/2007, with only 7,000 miles on the tune up already. I checked all the vacuum hoses on the engine and made sure all the clamps were in place. I put one bottle of engine cleaner in the tank two weeks ago, drove it only 5 miles. No code error on diagnostic last Thursday, February 23, 2011.

Do you think I might have a stuck throttle linkage or something? Toyota Motors (dealer) blew pressurized air in the throttle body on February 7, 2011.

It has a manual transmission. I cleaned the throttle body and choke. It kept it on for awhile. But it began to stop in traffic while waiting at the traffic lights. The dashboard lights up "check engine with icon".

I find it very puzzling at this point. Do you think it might be the O2 sensor at work?

If the Check Engine Light is on, why don't you start by reading the CEL codes from the ECM? That should point you in some direction.

You didn't say what engine you have, but you say you had the throttle body and choke cleaned. An EFI engine has a throttle body and a carbed engine has a choke, but neither engine has both.

Re: 93 Toyota Pickup 2WD -Runs but no acceleration

The ECM or the Electronic Code Machine reads out CEL codes. I don't have this machine rather I relied on the mechanics readings when I took it to the shop. The pickup I do have does have a throttle body. But I was referring to the inner door of the throttle body when closed is choked. I find it similiar to the carburetor run engines.

At 100 dollars a pop it may be costly to get the ECM or diagnostic tool. I will give it a try, thanks.

Re: 93 Toyota Pickup 2WD -Runs but no acceleration

A 93 is OBD-I, you don't need a scanner or code reader. You just short 2 terminals in the test connector, turn the Ign to On (not Start), and count the flashes of the CEL.

You can find the exact steps if you search.

Wink Re: 93 Toyota Pickup 2WD -Runs but no acceleration

Thanks for the information, you are a great help. I tried to pull the codes this evening and it kept flashing only. I remembered I reset the Engine Control unit by pulling the 15 amp fuse for EFI. The engine ran well but I have to road test and see if the problem reoccurs. Many thanks. let you know what happens when I retest the pickup.

Unhappy Re: 93 Toyota Pickup 2WD -Runs but no acceleration

I drove the pickup on the road and when it got warm the pickup lost power and the engine began to surge again. Barely made it back home.

I did the CEL again and the panel just flashes on and off with an engine icon. This meant nothing is wrong with the car. Any other suggestions?

Unhappy Re: 93 Toyota Pickup 2WD -Runs but no acceleration

I replaced the O2 sensor after getting a code 31 from the CEL, tested the pickup on the road and still the same thing happened no acceleration. Now I am getting code 13 on the CEL but I don't have the explanation on how this is corrected. It states on some web sites it is NE or dirty connections at the distributor. Cleaned up the connections and still the same. Anyone have a suggestion that will help me?
