93 accord "jdm" auto trans hard shifts
i bought a 93 accord with 217000 miles on it... supposedly the guy put a jdm trans in it but had no paper work on it any way i got it cheap the only problem is it tends to shift hard 1-2 2-3 3-4 (all gears) temp out side or temp of car seems to make little to no difference the lock up works and it seems i can take some of the harshness out of the shifts by anticipating the shifts and slightly letting off the throttle right as it shifts now ive read about the vss or even the "tcu" causing similar issues but im not 100 % mainly because i have no ses or d4 lights on ......the only other thing that may be related is the cruise control won't work when its cold (around 25 to 30 outside and it wont work at all higher temps it works most of the time but occasionally will disengage at random times) any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Re: 93 accord "jdm" auto trans hard shifts
The VSS signal can be incorrect or corrupt but as long as it is within possible parameters, the TCU will accept it...it'll only code for it if it's WAY off or non-existent. But it could cause the kind of symptoms you're seeing, cruise issue as well, but in conjunction with temp sounds more like a cruise servo problem for that issue...
Does yours have a TV detent cable? I can't remember if old Hondas had that. That will do the harsh upshift too, if not adjusted correctly...as well as a corrupt throttle position sensor, but usually with that you'd have idle speed weirdness too....

Also I gotta ask, are you familiar with older honda automatics...they do upshift harsh as hell, even when working correctly.
When my mom bought hers new in '95, that was one thing I warned her about. She later said she was glad I mentioned it, or she would have thought it was something wrong....I'm guessing you know how they are supposed to feel, but thought I'd ask...

Re: 93 accord "jdm" auto trans hard shifts
not really familiar with older honda automatics all my others were 5 speeds (3 civics ) it does have the tv cable .... ok so how hard is too hard for the upshifts its not knocking things off the dash or any thing but its defiantly a hard shift maybe not as hard as my camaro (has aggressive shift kit ) but its pretty close also i did notice to day that the tach seems to jump around when its around 3700 to 4500 rpm

Re: 93 accord "jdm" auto trans hard shifts
Kinda hard to quantify...try going on craigslist and find one around your year and see if you can flim-flam a quick test drive for comparison, unless you know someone with one...that'll give you some idea.
The 1-2 upshift is a real neck snapper if you hit it with any authority....in my mom's case, she lives in the country and has to turn from her road onto a state highway with a 55 mph limit and a blind hill to the left, so you gotta pull out and trounce it, or someone will pop over that hill and ruin your day. Even the 2-3 shift is pretty harsh when you're giving it the boot like that, but the 3-4 is usually pretty refined. Honda liked to keep those motors spooled up in the powerband a little longer than other makes, take advantage of their motors' character. But a lotta people found them disturbingly harsh until they got used to it. I guess the question is, does it feel like it's staying in the lower gear too long, and WON'T upshift until way too high or you back out of it, or shifting appropriately for engine speed, but too harshly? Unfortunately I don't remember the detent cable adjustment procedure, but I remember it's pretty simple, and I'd start there, just to rule it out. If they had a tranny put in it, like you said, it may have needed some fine tuning on that which never got done....

Re: 93 accord "jdm" auto trans hard shifts
no it seems to shit at about a normal rpm and what you say seems about dead on as far as shifting goes ............... off subject i know but i tightened my alternator belt and in the proses moved the cruise control servo to make it easier to get to the bolts. i only unplugged the one electrical connector and put everything back now when i press set the light in the dash illuminates but it isn't engaging . i have double checked the connector and vacuum line and all looks well even pulled the vac line to make sure it had vacuum any ideas? this is also my first honda with cruise control lol all my civics were dx's with nothing i think one of them had ac
