Need some advice

So my parents just gave me their 325i 2006. It has 158 000 miles on it. Tranny doesn't feel soo good prolly need to get fixed quite soon. My cadalic converter if thats what you call it is broken. ( bassically my exhaust makes the most disgusting sound ever in neutral and drive when im not accelerating.) I just blew my two back tires driving like an idiot. ( Couldn't help it lol sooo fun)

But anyways does anyone know estimates of how much it will cost to get my baby running almost new..... or should i sell it for the 6 grand and get a diffrent car.

I love this car and i have always wanted it since i was 14.... thats why im struggling making this descision.

HELP !!!!!!

Re: Need some advice

German car's are pretty expensive as far as maintence goes. I would call a couple local mechanics and see what quotes you get and compare.

Re: Need some advice

Ya, same here.. My friends parents gave him his '05 325i wich we loved, but due to transmission failure and having to rebuild it, it was to much, I can't recall exactly how much he was quoted, but i know he didn't have the money for it and shortly after sold it. Like i said i'd check around local mechanics and see how much it's gonna be and how much your willing to spend. Good luck!

Re: Need some advice

personally if i had a never ending cash flow i would drop a new/used engine, a new tran, and a new exhaust system. But im pretty damn sure it would cost an arm and a leg.

Im thinkin bought selling it and picking up a civic.

Re: Need some advice

Ya it would cost a pretty penny! If you do decide to sell it and pick up a civic, I'd go for a stock civic that's never been touched besides regular maintence. So you can build it yourself and know that nothings wrong with it unless you did it yourself. Just my opinion

Re: Need some advice

If you want to get a realistic idea of what you could get for the car in the shape it's in, try using Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds.com and Vehix.com to get 3 different price estimates. When it comes to assessing the condition, be honest - it's in POOR shape right now with all the work you're talking about.

I know you love that car - but sometimes it's best to cut your losses. It sounds like you've got a pretty good idea of what you would want to replace it with. A Civic is a GREAT cheap car, and if well maintained, will run until the government bans internal combustion engines. Just as an idea, I've got a 97 Civic coupe with a 5spd and I got 32mpg on my last gas tank by driving like a granny and shifting before 3k rpm.

Re: Need some advice

I've read elsewhere that BMW transmissions run 7-8000. Add that to what you can get for it and you'll have something more reliable.
