Re: Wheel Tub / Liner

Not sure about you but I'm not use to see carpet in race cars. In my mind it's whatever floats your boat. It's looks good from Gainesville, GA

Re: Wheel Tub / Liner

I installed carpet on the side bulkheads as was originally installed by Panoz and on the passenger floor board to cover heat barrier sheets I wanted to add. It keeps the arms and passenger feet from getting burned. I used a durable indoor outdoor carpet in black cut pile. I'm planning on doing it on the trans tunnel like Devin did as well. I have the plywood floor plate on the drivers side and it does fine for heat and durability. Since I seldom have a passenger once word got out I crashed with David Eastman on board (not from David, he kinda liked it), none of these areas are high wear so the added insulation and carpet covering looks good, is durable and does a good job. I'll bet it all weighs less than 5 pounds. That's a lot of utility for not much cost in my book. Since I run in the hot and humid Texas climate, heat control is a big deal- as in 135 degrees in the cockpit. Yes, I do have an additional thermometer on the dash panel. I didn't believe the PI. When I can't read it any more, I know I've reached my limit and take it in. My cool shirt system is one of the smaller ones and is done in 30 minutes and me shortly thereafter. Upgrades coming

Mike

Re: Wheel Tub / Liner

I too was looking at carpet but could not pass tech because the shag was considered a fire hazard.

It's only the Lime Green shag that causes people to set your car on fire

Have you ever witnessed carpet burning? Not only does the glue and fiber burn, it melts and sticks to anything it touches and continues to burn.

Are seat covers made of fire resistant material??? I doubt the padding is.

Re: Wheel Tub / Liner

I have to admit that is a good point. Are all interior panels and carpet required to be removed in NASA, SCCA, etc. for non professional classes? Serious question as I really don't know the answer. I ask because it occurs to me that they have probably seriously and carefully considered the risks and made their rules accordingly. It would be interesting to know what the rules are for the various levels of competition. By the way, don't let the DOT know about this as we'd all be sitting in ceramic interiors if it occurred to them.

Jeez, you LS1 guys must have way to much power and your cars are to light........... Factory carpet was first thing I ditched on quest to make an old cast iron blocked Ford powered car faster.

On the other hand a cast iron block is may be better at "parts containment" during engine blow up, so I guess having an extra layer of protection via carpet may not be such a bad thing for you LS guys.

Kel.

PS - hope your enjoying your winter snow (some of my parts are held up in the States because of it) , darn hot over here at the moment.

Re: Wheel Tub / Liner

almost finished - car goes out for her first weekend next Saturday - just a test and tune with our local club for some corner worker training - great way to break in the car and driver after a year off the pavement.

Anyway, as I button things up I wanted to share (an almost finished) interior shot as most of you expressed interest: Just one final tweak on the 2nd dash panel and I think I am done inside:
