ABS & Brake dash lights
My 02 Silverado has the brake and abs dash lights on intermitantly, I drive a while and they both come on, then they may go off a while, could it be a loose ground or something minor like that? thanks for any help

Re: ABS & Brake dash lights
Have you made sure your park brake is released? Generally the BRAKE light on the cluster will be on because the park brake is either 1) engaged or 2) something is wrong with it. The ABS light is coming on to tell you something is wrong with the ABS system and it's disabling the system (best way to ensure your safety is to pull the ABS fuse until the problem is fixed)

Re: ABS & Brake dash lights
Also check the break fluid level, as the breaks wear, it just might need more fluid.

Re: ABS & Brake dash lights
X2 on check fluid level as most vehicles trigger the brake dash light when it registers low. Maybe it is happening when it is at certain angles causing it to think the level is lower than it actually is. Which would also explain why it goes back off.

Inspect your brake lines and hoses, check your pads and rotors. It's just better to cover all your bases.

If the problem continues this most often is the ECBM which is the ABS control module mounted on top of this metal box with all the brake lines going IN/OUT of it. you are not alone with this failure. some can be repaired some not. if not this module is expensive . most pull the 60amp ABS fuse to disable the ABS from operating , until it is to be repaired. with this fuse removed the vehicle will operate like one with no abs. |

Re: ABS & Brake dash lights
I had a 02 silverado z71 that the abs light came on intermitate to. When I put it in the shop to have it repaired they had to replace a bad wheel bearing. Had to change the whole hub assembly(thanks GM for that expense) cause you can't change the bearing by itself. Seems that somehow it was setting of the abs system. Sometimes when I stepped on the brakes at slow speeds it tryed to free wheel. Scared the crap out of me. Caust me 500.00 to fix.

Re: ABS & Brake dash lights
If it's just the ABS light, I would suspect a bad, or dirty wheel/speed sensor on the front, because 80% of wear, tear, and heat is from the front brakes.

Re: ABS & Brake dash lights
Now I'm needing to get this fixed soon, my inspection sticker expires at the end of the month. I've checked the brake release, fluid level, no problems there. I have now pulled the drivers side caliper and hub. The pads are nearly new, the rotors are perfect, in fact the brakes work great with a full pedal. Can the sensors be checked with an ohm meter, if so what should they read? I'm thinking, put it back together and take it to the shop, I'm sure they can put it on a computer and tell exactly what part has gone bad. What do yall think? thanks

follow my instructions in post #7 .............your abs light is on this is usually these grounds. especiallly if the vehicle has no brake issues... then you will need to get the ABS failure codes pulled this is a special OEM capable scanner ...very expensive ...need to call a shop that can getthese OEM specific DTC 's... |

Re: ABS & Brake dash lights
I am not finding the grounds anywhere new the ABS module. I took the truck to O'Rielly Auto parts, put it on the computer, here's the codes.
C0265 C0241 C0246 C0242 C0245 C0251 C0252 They guy cleared my computer and all the dummy lights are now off. He said, if I take it in for inspection and there are faults, the shop will fail the inspection, does this sound right? Thanks |

But always check there rules and regulations. For repair. AS SAID CHECK THEM GROUNDS. ![]() Can not find is not going to get it fixed. Get a good pin out diagram. Check all power and ground feeds. One of codes codes pertains to a power relay problem. Also watch for what codes come back. If all power and grounds check out get it on a ABS capable scanner and test out and read out data with scanner.
