i lost the ignition key for my car

i lost the ignition key for my car. i called ford guys to give my VIN number so that they can figure out the code, and after that they will provide me the new key. but all in vain.. they said its not possible..is it so...and is it rt that i need to call local locksmiths..am in a trouble now...Can some one put light on it..should i really call local locksmiths to get this done and why the hell ford guys cant get me the new key.. i am sure it will much cheaper then locksmiths.
