96 Lumina LIM gasket replacement
I found the answers to all the standard questions regarding this job. I have a question regarding the Lisle rod removal tool. I got the tool and I started with the back side and was able to remove 4 rods without a problem. The other two I can't remove, the tool does not move the arm high enough for the rods to come out. Do I actually have to undo the bolts on top of the arms, I thought the whole point of the tool was to not have to mess with the bolts on the arms.
If the bolts are undone, how much should I torque to set them back? Thanks.

Re: 96 Lumina LIM gasket replacement
18 ft/lb on pedestal type rocker bolts. Be very careful about limiting torque and examining bolt threads. This is a fairly weak design and proper assembly is critical. It is very easy to over-torque and strip the head bosses. I've done several thread inserts on these because of thread damage.

Re: 96 Lumina LIM gasket replacement
Guys, the tool is turning out to be a waste of money for me. I got it because I was not able to remove the rear valve cover, but I can not compress the two rocker arms in the back far enough to take the rod out.
I'm unable to remove the lower right bolt on the back valve cover. I can't use a socket, because there's a long bolt that holds the coil plate right by the bolt and it leaves no room for a socket. I'm trying to use an 8mm box wrench, but it's only stripping the bolt. So it looks like I'm stuck here, any suggestions? P.S. Really disappointed with the tool, what's the use of it if not all the arms can be pushed down far enough. I think I won't be able to use it on half of the arms.

Re: 96 Lumina LIM gasket replacement
Buy one of the tool's to tilt the motor ahead so u can remove the rear valve cover and do the job the right way It's called an engine tilter and it will tilt the motor forward to access the rear of it. Here's the link on lisle tools website.

Re: 96 Lumina LIM gasket replacement
Thanks will look into it. I'm currently able to get to the lower right bolt without a problem. I am having problems with actually attaching a socket there, as there's another large bolt in the way.
How do shops do it, am I missing a magic tool?

Re: 96 Lumina LIM gasket replacement
If you turn the motor over to the point the valves are closed the tool should work.

Re: 96 Lumina LIM gasket replacement
i can tell u how. Put a socket and a breaker bar on the bolt holding the front dampner on and turn it over so the lifter is on the low side of the can that u want to remove the push rod on.

Re: 96 Lumina LIM gasket replacement
I must be doing it all wrong. I've been able to replace intake gaskets without touching the push rods:
