2000 silverado low oil pressure after oil change
I just changed my oil. The first 2 days after the oil change, I noticed nothing unusual. Yesterday afternoon, the service light came on but I was headed to work so didnt pay a whole lot of attention to it. After work it didnt start very easy. It took maybe 15 tries, and when i finally did get it started it was struggling and the exhaust seemed like it was had some oil in it. On the way home i stopped at a light and noticed the oil pressure was down to 0 on the gauge and the oil pressure light came on. When i took again, the pressure went up and stayed on the low side of normal while i was driving, around 35mph. Thankfully i made it home.
Not sure what to do next.. any advice?? |

Re: 2000 silverado low oil pressure after oil change
Stop driving it, or what could be an easy fix will turn into thousands of $$$.
You didn't say if you checked the oil level, but if you do and its really low then: Check where you park it for evidence of oil leak; is oil plug on tight? Assuming you changed the oil filter too, check to see if it's leaking from the filter's rubber seal. When replacing the filter, did you lubricate the seal with some oil before tightening it? Sometimes the seal will bunch-up if its not lubricated. If possible, get it up on ramps and have a good look under the engine to see if/where it may be leaking oil. If oil level isn't low then it's probably a bad oil pump. Hope this helps. |

Re: 2000 silverado low oil pressure after oil change
Thanks for the reply, I looked underneath the truck and dont see any oil.
I had initially thought it might be the oil pump/sending unit so it was good to hear someone had the same idea. |

Re: 2000 silverado low oil pressure after oil change
1. who changed oil? physically, who did it?
2. GM drain plug gets loose with time; also, supposed to have sealing washer on it; i, also, wrap it with plumber tape for good seal. 3. where the drain plug is, leak has tendency to be blown onto the undercarriage. get UNDER and see what's going on 4. rubber ring on filters sometimes stays on the filter seat. rush can lead to not noticing this and slapping filter over it. that's why i'm asking - who did oil change? yo0u or "we don't give rats ass" boys at quick lube? i can not possibly see how regular oil change can damage oil pump, or oil pickup tube/screen. but i can see how not enough oil was put back in, or a leak that is blown onto the undercarriage. should you have had oil pump removed, that's different animal. seriously, get under and take a good look at everything. plus, check oil level. V8 takes 6 qrts refill. |
