2001 2500 Silverado runaway cruise control

Just picked up a 2001 Silverado 2500 with 200k on it. 6.0 engine runs well but while we were on the highway the other day with cruise set at 118 km/hr. the vehicle slowly started to accelerate. At about 135 km the brake was applied and we were able to scrub off 20 km/hr down to 115 before the brakes started to fade and heat. Tried to hit the brake pedal numerous times as well as shutting the cruise control off and on 6 or 7 times. After about 5 minutes of this it finally kicked off and we pulled over. I pulled the cruise control 10 amp fuse and we lost the fuel gauge as well at having the red battery problem indicator light up.
I spoke with a Gm mechanic and he said that his initial hunch would be a failed cruise control module. I found one at a wreckers for $100......GM wants $725 for a new one!
Just wondered if this had ever happened to anyone else with this truck and what might have caused it?

before buying any parts make sure the cruise control cable is not binding..

since you turned the cruise off, hit the brake pedal and the vehicle still did not reduce speed it cannot be the module.

the cable can stick.. this is an old high mileage vehicle ..

post back what you found.

another issue this has is the throttle body needs cleaning with throttlebody cleaner and a tooth brush..

do not use carb cleaner on this engine anywhere !

when cleaning use small amounts DO NOT FLOOD ENGINE WITH CLEANER !

continuing to accelerate while braking is most likely as Jcat said the cable for cruise control binding or sticking.

Just to add to this: Your biggest safety valve is the ignition switch if this ever happens again. In other words, turn it off and get off the road.
