I have a 96 continental that has a brake issue. When I push the brakes to slow down and I get at around 15-20 mph the brakes make a loud grinding noise and I can hear the pump from the abs do an automatic check. The brakes seem find, they stop me ok. I just have this problem when the abs does its check. I can hit my brakes to slow down and the brakes are fine. No grinding or anything, and they slow me down. But it is just when I am slowing down at a slower speed, like to stop ar a stop sign or a light that this happens. My abs light does not come on. Is it possible that I might have a caliper that is sticking and causing the abs to kick in?
Thanks for your help in advance. I am a woman and I just don't want to get hosed if it is something easy and I take it to the garage and they try to tell me that I need a whole brake system. |

Re: 96 Lincoln Continental brake question
That sounds like the first sign of the disc brake pads worn too far down.
Normally they rear their ugly heads on low speed, and nearly stopped kind of braking when their shot. If there is metal to metal contact, the shavings will easily confuse the ABS sensors. Take off the front wheels and have a look at the pads and rotor condition. You can see how much friction material is left on the pads very easily once the wheel is removed, and any rotor damage is a sure sign of worn pads.. too late, but you get the idea.

I checked the brake pads and rotors and they are in almost new condition. I was hioping that that might have been the problem, but unfortunately, it was not. Do you guys have any other ideas that might help? Thanks.

Since you had the brakes off...just my two cents, did you check the calipers? Are the rods sliding back and forth? Or are the stuck? Are the pads wearing evenly? It might be hard to tell if they look "new". Hope it's just a sticky caliper pin. Grease em up and hope that's it! Let us know!

Re: 96 Lincoln Continental brake question
Hi,
If the ABS comes on when slowing down it could also be the ring with the teeth on the axle half shaft that is part of the ABS. It happened to mine and I needed to replace the axle half shaft. Steve |

Re: 96 Lincoln Continental brake question
Hi Laurel,I have the same problem you had with your lincoln continental brakes.Did you ever find out what caused your brake problem? Please let me know what it was, so I can see if I have the same part failure. Thanks,HarryK

Re: 96 Lincoln Continental brake question
Thanks Steve,I have a abs scanning tool and nothing showed up.I did check the aluminum rings on the axle shafts. The right front ring does have a small split where the teeth seperate. The sensor ring is tight on the shaft.(it will not move)I checked all the abs wheel sensors and they all show the right ohm`s.When I checked the abs again with my scanning tool , all the wheel sensors showed up as defective.I tried to erase the codes but no luck.According to my repair manuel it will take 80 ignition starts for it to erase.I will do some more investigating into the slight split in the sensor ring.I hate changing parts needlessly.
