1996 Monte Carlo timing

I've been trying to figure this out for a while. The timing reads -28 and when I hit the gas, it goes to about -34. Any ideas? Also, why are there so many problems with this car? It has 86,000 and I've had the tranny rebuilt, 3 alternators, and countless sensors, and the check engine light comes on if I run long trips (60-100 miles) saying the trans is slipping. Then I drive around town for a few days and it goes off..

Re: 1996 Monte Carlo timing

hello, happy holidays. first how ru getting these readings, ru using a timing light or r u using a scan tool and getting it from the live data? is the car running unusually hot? do u have bad fuel mpg?any power loss?basically signs of retarded timing. second the trany....are u feeling the slipping? is it shifting hard....bangin into the next gear. i had p1811 and the trany would bang into the next gear. i erased the code after regular man. and the trany stopped slipping, and the code went away. i highly doubt that the trany fluid change had anything to do with fixin the prob. but im happy its shifting right and no more codes. so get the codes stored in the pcm, along with the freese frame data. if you dont have a scan tool u can go to autozone or pep boys n get it for free.

Re: 1996 Monte Carlo timing

Happy Holidays to you as well. I'm using a scan tool (currently on vacation and don't remember which one), and the car runs perfectly fine. I get 22mpg, which I think is good, it runs around 180 I think, power isn't that great, but it smokes tires. With the tranny, the car shifts extremely smooth. Aside from the rpms dropping, I can barely tell it shifts. Also, all the codes are currently cleared out. I took it off the road after the altenator went (less than 6 months) and was goimg to sell it. Still debating.
