2000 Regal ABS ECM replacement

The abs warning light on my 2000 Buick Regal GS has been coming on shortly after start of driving. The fault code indicates the left front wheel sensor is faulty. Using the computer it is possible to see the speed indication from that wheel and at a standstill that wheel fluctuates between 0 - 16 RPM.

I replaced the left front wheel hub and still have the same problem. Checking with an AC voltmeter I can sping the hub and I measure voltage proportional to the speed I spin the hub.

This leaves either a wire issue or the ECM. I have inspected the wires and found no obvious corrosion or breaks / shorts. I have cleaned all contacts with contact cleaner. This seems to leave the ECM as suspect.

Is there a procedure on this forum for replacement of the ABS ECM? Can I simply replace the electronics portion without getting into the hydraulics of the brake system? Any help is appreciated.

Re: 2000 Regal ABS ECM replacement

The '99 Regal should have had a DBC-VII system. I'm guessing you read a 1225 DTC. If you suspect the wire harness you can measure the wheel speed sensor output voltage at the controller harness just as you did at the wheel. If the signal is the same (or within a few mV) you can assume the harness is intact.

The controller (EBCM) can be replaced without replacing the entire system. The ECBM is not vehicle-specific, but IS system specific. In other words, if you have a four channel system without traction control, you will need a controller designed for that. If you have a three-channel system with an accelerometer input, you will need that specific controller. It the vehicle has an active brake/engine traction control or engine only traction control, you will need that type of module. The module communicates with the CAN bus, but shouldn't require any flash programming or set-up to install provided it is the correct type.

You can replace the Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module (EBTCM) separate from the ABS Motorpack and Modulator assembly. However, the problem with this module is the cost. Very expensive new. More reasonable if used or pull. The EBTCM is the part you see at the ABS Motorpack with the electrical connector. See pic for reference. However, it is still part of the hydraulics and will need to be properly bled of air.

Also, there are on-line repair shops that will rebuild the EBTCM module with a decent warranty. And will provide instructions.
