Question on new car purchase

I went to a Ford dealer on Tuesday evening and asked for a specific car (Fiesta, black with manual trans), after not being able to find what i wanted online. They didn't have it so the salesman had me fill out a retail order and said he could get it and then swap it out. I said i couldn't find any from a dealer's inventory online and he said, "there are 3 or 4 of them out there". He thenshowed me some printouts of window stickers that were of exactly what i wanted. He said he could have the car the next day. I put down a deposit and left. I didn't hear anything back so today (Thursday), i tried calling the dealer all day for an ETA but nobody called me back. I finally drove there shortly before closing and spoke with a sales manager. He said it's "inbound from the factory". It was going to another dealer after which they would swap it out. He said if i call tomorrow he could give me a ballpark ETA.

My question is, am i being strung along or does this sound genuine?

Re: Question on new car purchase

I just can't for the life of me figure out what they would gain by NOT getting me a car. I only put $200 down and they stand to profit more than that from the sale. Especially since i'm financing from them.

BTW, i checked them out with the BBB and found nothing.

Re: Question on new car purchase

I got a call today from the salesman telling me he got a car in so i went down and it was the wrong one (an S, not SE). He wasn't there when i got there but the manager (not the sales manager i talked to yesterday) spoke to me, showed me the window sticker copy (of the right car) and said he would find out what was going on. He was very courteous and didn't look happy about the situation. Someone else then said the car was inbound. I asked "an S or SE"? He said, "the exact one you ordered - the SE". I don't think that guy was a salesman as he was wearing more "blue collar" type attire. The manager then said "if it's in the system, it could be anywhere from 2 to 5 days".

So, does this sound reasonable?

Re: Question on new car purchase

Cool down, All is genuine, and your not being strung along, it's called dealer trade, and here is how it works.

Ford dealers place their order with Ford " just like food stores place their order with wholesalers " options - models - trim - etc

A Ford dealer can go an online for dealers only, locate to see what other dealers have in inventory, and that's why your salesperson told you there are 3 or 4 out there,,, as for having the vehicle the next day becomes questionable,,,

1,,, does this other dealer want to keep this vehicle in inventory ?
2,,, does this dealer not care to do business with your dealer ?
3,,, Will the small fee involved satisfy this dealership for your dealership to pick up the vehicle from their inventory ?

There are many factors,,, yes they only got a $200. deposit, but it's a sale,,, so keep your knickers on they will come through

Re: Question on new car purchase

Thanks. What scared me is that i looked at dealer inventory online within a 200 mile radius of my house and couldn't find one of what i wanted. That's why i was shocked when the salesman showed me copies 2 window stickers of exactly what i wanted. The only thing i could think of was that either they go farther than 200 miles out or the online inventory for customers doesn't show everything available. Thanks for your input.

Re: Question on new car purchase

Further development, i spoke to the salesman today and he told me the car is coming from Mexico and he was told it will be in on the 12th - 1 week from today. He was nice enough to fax me the window sticker so i googled the vin# and saw that it's showing up as being in inventory at a dealer in Tom's River, NJ. This salesman really doesn't seem like he's being deceptive but i was wondering if anyone can provide any insight into this. Is it possible that the car is coming from Mexico to the dealer in Tom's River and they just prematurely listed it in their online inventory?

Re: Question on new car purchase

All is in order,,, the dealer in Tom's River, NJ. ordered this vehicle from the Mfg for their inventory, your dealer contacted the dealer in Tom's River and made what we call a dealer trade, it's done every day hundered of times.

Re: Question on new car purchase

Just wanted to give an update. I got the car on Friday and it's exactly what i wanted. Also, the price came in at exactly what they originally promised. No tacked-on fees. Plus, the interest rate was much lower then i expected. No need to refinance which i was sure i was going to have to do. Long story short, i was concerned for nothing.
