Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird

It's the Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird by Tamiya.

As always the Tamiya bike kits are great to build, and have nice details:

Because the bike will be stock, I also wanted to paint it with a normal color. I think this Metallic Grey from Ducati suits the bike.

I hope to start today.

Kris.

Re: Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird

First update

First I sanded the cowlings and primered them.
Now I painted it Metalic Grey by Ducati.

I also painted the framework. I did a lot of masking for the 3 colors I used.

I painted the engine semigloss black and the covers in gloss black.

Nice! And the color looks perfect.

I have this kit in my collection, and have considered starting it several times, but never have.

Re: Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird

After I placed the decals at the fairings, I could finally clearcoat them. I mixed up some 2k Clear from Zero Paints and sprayed 3 layers on everything.

After it was dry I could paint the inside black.

The cockpit was also painted black, and the outside gun metal. I also painted the gun metal on the fairings beside the fueltank.

With the leftover clear, I painted the wheels.

And today I did some dryfitting to get an idea of how it will look:

Now back to the engine and fix it into the frame.

Re: Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird

Today I assembled the rearlink and everything that belongs to that.

I also made a start with the frontfork.

Now I must back to work on the engine, so everything can be placed in the framework some day.

Re: Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird

Got some work done on this one.

First I added the fuelcap on the fueltank.

I also added the tacho decals on the dashboard and placed it into the cowling.
I painted the windscreen with a black trim and also added the front light.

Next step was the engine. I finished it after adding the sparkplugcaps. Now it was time to install it into the framework.

Meanwhile I was also busy with the rearlights.

Next step are the exhausts. First I glued the mufflers together. The chrome was removed and some moldlines were removed.

After this I painted it gloss black, and after that I painted the exhaustpipes titanium gold by AlcladII paint. When it was dry I did a bit of heatstaining with Tamiya's wheateringset.

First I wanted to paint the mufflers with acladII chrome, but I used the nice powder from Kusette-Ginsan. This was the first time but man, this stuff is really great....!

And when everything was dry, I couldn't wait to fit it on the bike:

Now back to my workbench

Nice work so far.

Could explain a bit more the "powder"? I never heard of it before.

Thanks.

Well it's is a very fine powder that must be added on shiny black surfaces. You just rub it with a soft cloth or earstick. The longer you rub the more it will shine.

Here's a thread with a how to video.

Re: Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird

Time for another update.

A while ago I painted the discbrakes already, but I didn't want to drill out all those holes... Yesterday I had to do it, cause I want to finish the frontwheel.

And then mounted on the frontwheel. I also added a subtile wheatering on the brakes.

The frontfork was also assembled on the frame:

The buddyseat was painted matt 9 by Revell. I think it looks better than black.

Now it's time for some hoses and mounting the cowlings on the bike.

Re: Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird

First I added some brakehoses

And now I could finally mounting the cowlings. First I added the topcowling and mudguard.

The molded on bolts are removed and replaced by some nice Top Studio bolts.

And I finished the sidemirrors.

After this I placed the frontwheel:

And lost bot not least the sidecowlings:

On the exhausts I added a nice Leovinci SBK decal.

Meanwhile it is completed, so I'll post some final pics in a couple days.
