Noisy AC compresser stories lets hear them!

I wonder if anyone has a cheap cure for running with a noisy ac compresser. While not engaged, it often "rings" like a bell that doesn't get hit. I just had my serpentine belt replaced about a month ago before taking a 1000 mile trip. Good thing! It was as thick as my thumb and was supposed to be about 2 inches wide! I thought that that would sovle the problem of the noise but the service tech told me that "worn compresser bearings are common with the Cavalier". Has anyone else had to deal with this issue? Did you have to dig into your pocket and replace the compresser in order to keep the engine quiet. Unfortunately, this DOESN'T sound like a job for a well placed can of WD40!

Re: Noisy AC compresser stories lets hear them!

ive never had that problem with my cavalier, but i do in my 98 chevy 3500 diesel, the compressor will kick on for like a 1/2second every couple minutes,it drove me crazy so i unplugged it(which is bad for the seals)but it stopped the noise...

I don't think there is a cheap way to fix this, you're looking at a rebuild or replacement.

ok 1 question for you.... when its cold out, you don't run the A/C and by having the window down all your doing is promoting your self to catch a cold. Turning the heat on when its cold out actually takes the heat off your engine to heat the inside of your car helping the intake temps drop equaling a higher HP gain for yourself.... sorry but you left yourself open for that one.

Plus in the winter when you run the defroster the A/C compressor comes on automatically, anyway.

What size belt did you get to by pass the compressor? I am thinking about doing this to my girlfriends car to get through the winter and then replace the compressor in the spring.

oh man, i thought i was the only one, a quick fix i have found is just turn your air conditioner on for a second or 2, then the noise will go away, then usually when i turn the air right back off, the noise is still gone

Talking Re: Noisy AC compresser stories lets hear them!

I solved my problem. I bought a belt from Advance that does not use A/C. Belt fit right now with no problem. Noise gone...it was the clutch bearing... Now I realize I need to replace the whole unit...but I will not open it up until I have bought a new one.

Belt on Sale was $11.50...an A/C eliminator pulley with bracket is about $25...so I saved a few bucks.... This was 96 2.2 Cavalier, PS, AC with the belt tensioner just above the water pump ... 15mm socket. Belt is a Drive-Rite. 705K5...

Bottom line it worked for me... Cheers Mate...time a cold one !!!

The man from down under.....
