99 cougar auto transmission problem

I have a 99 cougar 2.5L auto.. When I was accelerating the transmission started slipping like crazy and lost all drive power but reverse, 1 and 2 still work. I was driving the car home in 2 when I shifted into neutral to gain speed coming down a hill, it was then that I discovered that "drive" will work fine but only at 60km and above. When the speed falls below 60km the transmission will just slip... any ideas on what this might be? Or is the transmission shot? Any help will greatly appreciated!!!!
