Power steering Pulley broke
The Power steering pulley broke off today on my99 silhouette today.
How hard is this to fix? I was quoted a price at the car shop of 250. Is this too much or can I fix it cheaper bv myself? The bolts are still in it. It looks like it just stripped out. |

Re: Power steering Pulley broke
Nothing. Is the pulley bolted on or pressed on to the pump hub?

Re: Power steering Pulley broke
$250 bucks to change out the pulley sounds way too high to me. You can purchase a replacement pulley for about $27 dollars. Go to a place that has a tool loaner program when you buy the pulley. You need a power steering pump pulley remover tool. I've had to do this twice now, once on a chev venture and once on my silhouette.
Its not hard, just takes time. If you can use a socket wrench effectively, then you can do this repair yourself. One word of caution about pulleys however: there is a reason the pulley failed. Two very good reasons are a failing pump or a failing crank pulley. The main crank pulley will get loose from its hub and get out of line. This will cause all manner of problems with the serpentine belt setup including failed alternator pulleys and power steering pump pulleys. Check that its still in line by pulling off the passenger tire and getting in there with a measure stick. Confirm that all pulleys are in the same plane after you fix the power steering pump. While the belt is off, check the condition and friction of all the other belt pulleys. You may need a new power steering pump and they don't come with a pulley either. Before you pull the old hub off the pump turn it rapidly by hand. It should be really easy to turn counterclock wise, just a bit of resistance clockwise. No sense putting a new pulley on a bad pump. This is a weekend mechanic job for sure--just get the right tools. |
