gas gauge with a mind of it own.

I have a 98 chevy silverado c/k1500 extended cab, vortex 5.7.

Gas guage not reading correctly. When the guage reads 1/4 tank, the tank is accually empty. Accasionally it will move from E to F just at random. Any ideas.

BAD FUEL PUMP; take off the Bed it takes 3 hours with 3 other friends to do the lifting...

It could be the fuel pump as mentioned, but could also be the instrument cluster. You need to look at GM recalls as I don't know what all years this effected, but on the 02 and 03 I know was affected. I had to get my replaced. My speedometer and my fuel gauge starting erratically dancing randomly.
