Suggestions?

I've got a 1978 Chevy Nova right now. Dad got it for my 18th birthday (I'm 19) and I've been happy with it for the most part, except parts are very hard to find, it's terrible on gas mileage, and it's lacking in power because of its straight 6. I'm looking for something more... practical I guess. I'm hoping to get a job and save up money for something newer (90's - present) that will be better in both mpg and power. And parts (both replacement and aftermarket) need to be readily available for it. I'm not sure on the best way to buy something since I've got no credit. I know my dad has very good credit (I think around 800?), but I'm not sure if he'd cosign on something since he seems like he had his heart set on me just sticking with the Nova. I think around $8000 is a decent price, it's something I could pay off in a year or so making minimum wage, right? I was thinking a Mustang since I've always had a thing for them. Or maybe a Camaro? I don't want it to be front wheel drive, I hate the feeling of being pulled. But I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I like your question, and it will most likely have 2 very different answers being from an older person or someone being around you age, I will answer from the old school.

Consider yourself lucky your dad provided you with wheels, yes it's old but it's transportation " lacking in power ? " yes " but it gets you from point A to B.

As for you buying something without a credit rating and a present job is totally out of the question, if you were my son here is how I would help you.

Yes,,, Get a job and show dad a monthy saving over 6 months, I would then co-sign for another vehicle to match your monthly proven savings, and your 6 month saving would go towards Insurance and down payment.

PS,,, You thinking Mustang or Camaro, LOL, so would I at your age, but let's consider Insurance first for these muscle cars prior to being pulled from the front or rear as a factor.
